Stand My Friends, Stand.

There is a word in my spirit that I feel like needs to come out however, I am not 100% sure what it is. Isn’t that funny? It’s as if there is a bubbling coming from deep within and rationally speaking, one would know what it is but, when you catch a glimpse or feel the surge, it quickly disappears from your sight or turns to a trickling that you can’t drink from.

Then one decides. I am going to sit. I am going to write about whatever it is that eludes me in hopes that it reappears and I am able to discern whatever it is because I myself am curious. So, here I am sitting, writing, wondering, praying, pressing in, listening, expectant and attentive to that Still Small Voice that might reveal Himself at any moment and the glimpse becomes a vision and the bubble becomes a river.

It’s been a season of waiting. It’s been a season of “one-day-at-a-time”. It’s been a season of I can’t. It’s been a season of weakness. It’s been a season of limitation. It's been a season of isolation. It’s been a season of patience. It’s been a season of hope. It’s been a season of grace. It’s been a season of rest. It’s been a season of nearness. It’s been a season of no limits. It's seems contradictory doesn't it? Yes, I agree.

Even still, it’s been all of this and more. This is the tension we live in isn’t it? It’s the “now" and the “not yet” of God’s Eternal Kingdom in all of its' glory but, we still see so dimly what awaits us. The decision to live Faith that says, the fullness of waits for me tomorrow, is accessible today but, as long as it stands in the distance, I will need to stand firm today in the midst of pain and suffering.

Standing. It’s about standing. How do we stand? I must go back to the importance of practice.

During this season especially on “those days” you know “those days”, don’t you? We all have them. Practicing on “those days” becomes a sacrifice of praise like no other. Even when you don’t feel like practicing, you do anyways because you understand that in order to stand, you must practice.

I don’t know what you are needing to practice in the season you are in but these have been the three things that I have been practicing in order to continue to stand as I wait:

1. Nothing compares to the Power of Praise. NOTHING.
2. God is Sovereign. Always. He is good. Always.
3. I don’t know what I lack until it’s lacking. Lack is a blessing. Lack reveals His power and provision.

I humbly encourage you to pen what are you needing to stand in today. We need to remind ourselves that standing requires practice and we need to know practically and tactically what we should be practicing.

Do this in the encouragement today of what John Piper says so eloquently, “Not only is all of your affliction momentary, not only is all of your affliction light, in comparison to Eternity and the glory there, but all of it is totally meaningful. Every millisecond of your pain from the fallen nature or fallen man, every millisecond of your misery in the path of obedience is producing a peculiar glory you will get because of that.”

"All of it is totally meaningful." There is so much to unpack here however instead, just take a moment, breathe in Life and allow it to permeate your circumstances. This one phrase inspired by Truth makes all the difference in the seemingly non-sensical journey that is life this side of Eternity. Nothing is meaningless in light of Eternity, in light of God's Eternal glory, in Light of who He is and in light of Whose we are. Nothing is lost on Him. Everything is absolute in meaning.

So what is there left to do? Stand my friends, stand. Stand firm. Hold fast. Be relentless in your stand. Remember. Practice. And when you have done all you know to do, stand. - Ephesians 6:13.  I am praying for you today.

This is just the beginning of a vision, just the beginning of a flow, but standing is a good start. Stand my friends, stand.

Você Não Sabe o Que Até Que o Que? A Falta.

Estou prestes a escrever algo realmente profundo e transformador agora, você está
pronto?

You Don't Know You What Until You What?! Lack.

I am about to write something really profound and deep right now, are you ready? You

don’t know lack until you are lacking. Or, you don’t know how lack effects you until you lack. Wow! I know, right?! Mind blown. Ha!

But, seriously, it’s true. Let’s be honest, how many of us actually know what our thyroid does? Why did God when He created men and women say, “Yes, the thyroid is important, we should definitely put that in there!” Well friends, now I know, and I know its’ lack.

So, let me begin by saying, if you haven’t thanked the Creator for this beautiful, functional and wonderfully made “machine" we call a body, please take a moment and give thanks!  Moreover specifically, you lucky people that still have a thyroid, take a moment and give thanks for such a small gland with such a large impact!

As it turns out friends, the tumor on my thyroid was confirmed cancer. God is still good. He is faithful. I am grateful it was caught early and He truly is the God of the 95%. If you aren’t sure what that means, you can read my last post if you like.

However, the diagnosis means for me and family that we must continue to wait and so, we are waiting. Daily life and routine waits for no one, and we have come to a place where we must manage one day at a time and sometimes even moment to moment depending on what is going on in a busy schedule.

I am just shy of one month out from surgery.  When you have a complete thyroidectomy, it takes between 10 to 15 days for your body to realize that your thyroid is no longer with you. Side effects from the lack of hormones becomes increasingly prevalent. I am not currently able to replace what is lacking due to further exams that are necessary for treatment.

I won’t go into a lot of detail as to not bore you, but your thyroid manages your metabolic and cardiovascular systems as well as other functions. Side effects due to the lack of these hormones can vary from extreme lethargy, swelling, temperature sensitivity, mood swings to blurry vision. It can be quite a roller coaster and not the fun kind.

This waiting time continues to challenge me to pursue how to wait well. Especially because those that I love the most, my husband and my daughter who are with me day in and day out see it all, experience it all and pay the cost with me. Please, if you remember anything from what I have written, please pray for them today, they are in the trenches with me and need grace and mercy for the journey.

As I have been processing all of this with the Lord it occurred to me that until a month ago, I didn’t know what it was like to sing, speak, yawn or swallow without a thyroid. Until last year, I had never researched thyroid function. Further, I read about the side effects of a thyroidectomy but, I didn’t know practically what side effects would come about because frankly, I wasn’t lacking.

However, now I am. I am severely lacking. It effects my day to day, moment to moment, those I love most, my plans for the next few months and ultimately, this will effect the rest of my days. Again, not victimizing myself, no drama here, just a reality check. It is and it will effect me until I am on the other side of Eternity and made whole again. God is Hope!

So here it is, that profound phrase again, “You don’t know lack until you are lacking.” However, you also don’t know the extent to which God sustains and provides until you experience what you yourself cannot provide. I have never been more convinced of this until now. It’s not to say I haven’t experienced lack. Lord knows, I have.

Stay with me, you see in the current situation, I have no control. I cannot “do" anything. There is no other doctor, no other resource, no medicine, no “other way” to move around my current obstacle that hormones are lacking in my body and responsibly, I must wait. My current breath prayer is, “Holy Spirit, you are my hormones.” How many times have I ever needed to pray that in my life up until this moment? Honestly, never. But now, it’s my breath prayer because it is true! Now I boldly ask Holy Spirit daily, to be what I cannot myself provide.

But, let’s be honest here! Isn’t that how it should ALWAYS be for EVERYTHING? Shouldn’t dependence on Him permeate all that we are, all that we say and all that we do? Shouldn’t that kind of dependence be His mark on our lives so, that when people know us, look at us, they see the goodness, the mercy and love of Holy Spirit providing for all that is needed to “do this life well”? I don’t want to live any other way, I don’t want to live thinking that for one moment, I can do this thing called life, by myself. It’s simply not true.

I hope this encourages you today friends, no matter what you are experiencing in lack, you can experience the extent to which God will go to provide what you yourself cannot provide. May that Truth being practiced in us cause Hope and Trust to bubble up and overflow to touch the lives of those around us who might not even know what they are lacking but, more than ever need to experience true Provision. Amen!

CONFISSÕES & REFLEXÕES - Você é um Cachorro?

Pertencer…

CONFESSIONS & REFLECTIONS - Are You a Dog?

Belonging… I’ve been meditating on belonging as it seems to be something that eludes me more often than not.

In the passage from Matthew 15, the Lebanese woman comes to Jesus asking that He heal her demon tormented daughter. Jesus’ response is actually quite shocking. He doesn’t acknowledge. His disciples actually ask if Jesus was going to do something about.

Basically, Jesus answers saying that he didn't come for people like her… shocking again. I will take poetic license here to say that she doesn’t “belong”. Then, He continues saying that a man gives food to his children, he doesn’t throw good food out to the dogs… basically, calling her a dog. So, not only does she not “belong" but, she’s a dog too. Ummm… shocking again!

Surprisingly, she doesn’t quit. She continues calling out saying, perhaps she doesn’t belong or deserve her miracle but even puppies get crumbs from the prince’s table. Meaning, “I may be a dog but, I can still eat off the floor what falls off the table of those that do “belong.” Gutsy gal.

CONFESSIONS & REFLECTIONS - Are You a Dog?

There’s a lesson in belonging here. I confess it’s very rare when I feel like I belong somewhere. It’s been awhile since the last time I felt as if I truly belonged in family, with friends, at church, in a culture. This passage is striking to me first for Jesus’ initial response and then for how the woman just doesn’t give up. She knows what Jesus can do. Knows where He is from (He is part of those that “belong”) and she knows where she is from and yet, she persists.

If it was me, I would have walked away sadly at the first side-slapped response… I didn’t come for people like you… that would have been my exit but, this lady has got grit. She responds to Jesus, agrees with Him, takes on her lowly position with gumption and poise and gets her miracle because her faith is “strong”.

What? Was anyone else caught off-guard by that? I sure was and I have read this passage many times! So then it means that because of the position of her heart, persistence in apparent negativity she gets the blessing that was meant for those that seemingly “belong" and thus joining the ranks of those that truly do “belong”…. That’s good news for anyone who struggles with feeling out-of-place. Own it but don’t live in it, wallow in it. Position and posture for an upgrade because:

It would be safe to say that belonging is an inside job. The sense of belonging that can be so hard to find whether in family, culture, job, church neighborhood comes from an inner understanding that whether we are “in" or “out" agreeing with Jesus is always the best route and belonging comes as a consequence of not allowing outward influences determine inward posture. The miracle or blessing is profit. Jesus knows we are not “dogs" the question is, do we?

CONFESSIONS & REFLECTIONS - Be a Good Follower

It is only right to do all that God requires - Jesus. Matthew 3

This was written when Jesus began his ministry. He left Galilee and met John the Baptist at the Jordan to be baptized. John protested saying that it would be more appropriate that Jesus was the One to baptized him, not the other way around. Jesus, responds saying that it is ONLY right to do ALL that God has required.

CONFESSIONS & REFLECTIONS - Be a Good Follower

Now, let’s consider, did John have something that Jesus needed? No. Did the water provide Jesus with something necessary to begin his mission and ministry? No. Did Jesus know the specific outcome of his baptism? Arguably, no… which means, most likely He didn’t know ahead of time that the heavenly realm would open and the Father’s voice would appear audibly with a seal of approval and certified identity.

Nevertheless, Jesus’ response here gives us a picture of what true obedience looks like. “It is only right to do ALL  that God requires.”  Seemingly insignificant acts of surrender and compliance with all that God has asked make waves in Eternity. For example, this one act of obedience on Jesus’ part has established what sonship and identity looks like, not only for Himself but for all those who share the same sonship - us. We are pleasing to the Father before we do anything - it’s about whose we are and who we are, not what we do or have done to prove our worth.

We know that Jesus was the best Leader that has ever and will ever walk the face of the Earth but, that is only because He was the best follower. He willingly and proactively was led by the Spirit. He ONLY did what he saw the Father doing.

Matthew chapter 2 talks of the dream that Joseph had where he received instruction, “Get up NOW and flee to Egypt” the angel of the Lord said. “So that very night he got up and took Jesus and his mother…” Words that are time-sensitive, that depict urgency and proactivity are important for us to pay attention to. ‘Now’, ‘Immediately’, ‘..that very’… warrant attention as do words of quantity such as, ‘all’ and ‘none’ when we are talking about what it means to be a good follower.

To be a good leader we must be a good follower and to be a good follower we must be “all in” at “all times”.
